Meet The “Practical Buddha”
“She was crying with joy, hugging and kissing me in the middle of the gym! That’s the moment I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life…”
At age 22, Tom Notarianni was diagnosed with dysthymia, a form of chronic depression. And given Paxil to “solve the problem.”
What was wrong? Sure, he’d grown up in what he called “your typical dysfunctional Italian family”… he’d also tried (and failed!) going to college… and bounced from job to job trying to find something meaningful.
But the real problem was his mind was in a “fog”…
After landing in the hospital to recover from a hernia, Tom realized he needed to change his lifestyle. And resolved to go to the gym.
What he experienced was life-changing… not only was his body getting stronger and healthier, but his mind was getting better too! He was finally feeling happier in his life.
After 6 months he was able to quit the meds and decided to become a Certified Personal Trainer. That’s when he had an experience that would alter the direction of his life forever…
A very shy and scared elderly woman came to see him for help. He spent an extra 90 minutes to help her feel more comfortable in the gym. At the end, she was crying with joy, hugging and kissing him in the middle of gym! That’s when Tom realized he’d found his calling – to help and teach others to be happy.
His study of joy and happiness eventually led him to go beyond the gym and look at the effects food, diet, and other factors had on his mind. He had come to the realization that “when his mind was good, his world was good.” Â
He dove head-first into spiritual teachings and learned directly form Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and studied Vajrayana Buddhism with monks for years. Meditation became the crown jewel of his practice. Â
From 2004 to 2008 Tom was appointed Wellness Director for the Delray Center for Healing in south Florida. He then became a spiritual wellness teacher and has since mentored hundreds of people from all walks of life… from nurses to Fortune 500 execs to everyone in between!
Today, Tom is devoted to raising the consciousness of humanity through his teachings at Practical Buddha.

I've struggled with anxiety throughout my life, and tried several different therapists. While it felt good to talk about it, my anxiety levels didn't really go down. I sometimes felt they went up, given the therapist "re-hashing" difficult events from the past.
I noticed after talking with Tommy, my situation didn't change, but the way I was thinking changed, and I always felt better. My awareness of how I felt, physically, mentally, and emotionally, and my awareness of my mind's reaction to everything became evident. Simply put, I started to become aware and conscious. I started asking myself, "Is what I'm doing contributing to my happiness?"Â
There are so many breakthrough moments I've had with Tommy, but two stand out to me: 1. Tommy asked me, "What do YOU want?" When he asked me that question, there was silence. No-one had ever asked me that before, and I didn't know how to answer him. 2. Whenever something happened, Tommy would tell me "Simply observe." I remember being so frustrated when he first told me that because I wanted a "solution". Some time later, I realized his response was the solution. I didn't need to fix anything, but I also didn't need to become emotionally entangled to the event either.
Tommy's greatest strengths are his ability to listen without judgement, and his compassion. I've always felt comfortable talking with him about anything, and I know that he truly cares. The advice, support, and friendship has changed my life and I am forever grateful.
